Qingdao Ocean University
The Ocean University of China (OUC) is Qingdao’s premier university, the only university Qingdao to be ranked among the top 50 in China. It began life in 1924 as a private ‘Qingdao University’. After a few decades and several name changes later in 1960 the then ‘Shandong College of Oceanography’ was chosen as one of 13 key universities in China to be directly administered by the State Ministry of Education. Today ‘Ocean University of China’ is a comprehensive university offering courses in Economics, Liberal Arts, Science, Engineering and Management.
In 2008 there are 750 foreign students studying at OUC making it the university with the largest number of foreign students that Chinese in China works with. Around 400 of these are studying on either long term Chinese language programs or the International Chinese Business program which is taught mostly in English. The remaining students are all studying either undergraduate or postgraduate degrees having attained the required HSK score to undertake subject study using Chinese.
Ocean University has 3 campuses across the city with Chinese language and International Chinese Business both being taught at the Fushan campus a 5 minute taxi ride or 10 minute bus ride from the city centre.
For accommodation OUC has a policy of placing all international students on campus for at least the first semester. The vast majority of students enjoy living in the campus hostels as they offer a social atmosphere with convenient access to campus facilities. The rooms were all renovated and refurbished in 2006 and have cable internet access available.
